How do I make a home network with 2 computers?

I want to connect my kids computer to my cable internet access with a wireless router. They'll be on the same floor, but in different rooms, about 25 feet apart.

I'd also like for us to access files between the computers and for them to be able to use my printer, if possible. What do I need for that?

I've seen starter kits that come with the base and a card to install in the computer, do I need to buy an additional card for the second computer, or is the base for the first computer and the included card meant for the second computer? This is so confusing. Please help.

Ok, you have your cable connection coming into the router via the WAN port. There should be 4 LAN ports as well. One should be connected to your main computer. I will assume that is your setup.

Now you have 2 options for the second computer. You can run a cable, which will be faster and more reliable. Or you can use a wireless card which is easier.

To set up the network, your router should have an automated setup wizard. After that is done, you need to go onto your computers and make the drives and printers as shared.

u didnt tell us what internet service provider do u have. I a tech support from sbcglobal.net but basically, when the two rooms of your kids have a wireless adapter. %26#123;if not you need to get a those wireless adapter%26#125; as this adapters are the ones that will detect a signal transmitted from the wireless router. Somehow, it depends in the network connections, u just have to set-up wireless connection icon in the two computers of your kids using the main computer... you will have to troubleshoot that one and the two others will follow..%26#123;take note.. this will be after u installed the wireless adapter%26#125; the first clue is that when u see that the adapters light are in green, then ur good to go. if not or if it is bliking or in red or orange, it means it is detecting a signal or there is something wrong with the configuration. I can help you with that but the main point here is that, u need to call your internet service provider because sometimes, the routers arent compatible with the ISP's. If that happen you need to call the manufacturer of the router. then they will help you configure that out. If not .. or if you bought the router to the store from your ISP you're good to go dear. No matter how long it will be, they will give u full assistance. Trust me! I even troubleshoot computers with blind owners.
You failed to mention what systems you are running so I'll guess, with xp systems just click on start and start the tour to get quick and easy step by step instruction
Yeah, well, wireless networking isn't as simple as all of those atomic physicists make it out to be. If you get a wireless router for by the cable modem (between the modem and the desktop it is plugged into now) you can connect that one with wires, then just put the wireless card in your kid's computer and follow the setup instructions it should fulfill what you are looking for here. Get the wired one working first so you can access the router's setup page to set up the wireless part. Using a wireless card from the same manufacturer as the router is probably a good idea, especially if they are sold together. That way you only have one tech assistance number to call.
what you need is the internet cable connection (you have it), and a HUB, a router and depending if you wanto to make it wireless or use wires. what the HUB does is administrate the information flux, it gives each pc a ID number, so when you request a page the router knows that the page loaded most be redirected to your pc and not to your kid's. and the same thing is with the printer
