Can macintosh computers get viruses?

I got this APPLE laptop and I thought that i should install some kind of virus protection on it. I have always had PCs and i was always told to protect them. My friends told me not to bother getting protection because Apple computers do not get viruses. I know this a stupid question but i really want to know, so i can best protect my computer..
