how do i do this? someone has told me this is what i must do in order to connect two computers with a cat5 crossover cable. i was also wondering if you could do this between an ubuntu computer and a windows one. from the ubuntu computer being able to use the dvd burner of the windows computer.

You can make the connection even though the machines are different OS. As to using the devices your should be able to read from the burner however, I am unsure if you will be able to use it as a burner.

Can it be done? Yes, but it is not simple.

Use a crossover cable to connect the 2 machines. You need to share the DVD burner on the windows machine. Here's where it gets tricky...you will need to have a device driver to use it as a burner but if you have the mose recent Linux kernel the you should be able to read disks once the drive is mounted.
