My computer has 4 slots dedicated for memory. I currently have (2) 256mb chips. I assume that the biggest chip there is, 2gb. Does that mean that I can have 8gb of ram in my computer? I want the best, so how will having that much RAM effect my computers performance? Each chip says 256mb DDR-400mhz- CL3. It also says PC3200U-30330. The brand name is Elixir. What does all this mean? what do I need to pay attention too when purchasing new memory?

It will tell you exactly what type of RAM you need
Nope, it's not that easy.
You'll need to make sure your MB can support more memory (many are limited in capacity), and you'll need to stop a 3.5GB for XP--that's all it can address.
Go to crucial.com for a program to scan your system for memory capacity.
