Considering buying a refurbished Hewlett Packard Pavilion Slimline computer. Beyond cosmetic considerations, do refurbished computers come with the same waranty as new? Do they appear to have similar lifespans? Are they a good deal or am I begging for trouble?

The standard warranty is usually 90 days instead of one year. You can buy an extended warranty though. The value is generally much better than a new computer.
Life spans are difficult to compare because it depends on a lot of things. As long as the power supply is good and not damaged, the computer should function normally. A lot of refurbished computers are the ones that fell off the shelf, even though they are packed really well with Styrofoam and are inspected by a manufacturer's technician afterwards, the components can still be damaged by the shock.
Refurbished machines are decent, not a bad option for anyone on a budget or just not wishing to spend the outragious sums the "new" systems command these days. If more folks bought refurbished, new prices would go down.
