Why Can iMac Computers Run Windows But Other Computers Can't Run Mac OSX?

Why can't computers other than iMacs, or MacBooks run the Mac OSX? I am at a school store typing on a Mac right now that is running the Windows XP OS. But there are other computers here that don't run the Mac OS. Why is that?

Because Apple writes the software for Mac OS and designs the hardware. They write the software so that it will only run on their hardware (Macs don't have a BIOS, for example, among other differences between them and non-Apple hardware). They also haven't licensed their software to run on other hardware, so running it on something else is illegal. Microsoft, on the other hand, is a software company. They don't make hardware, so Windows is pretty hardware independent.

Consider how much piracy there is, I can't blame Apple for trying to keep their software tied to their hardware. If they licensed the software for use on other hardware, the pirates would probably drive them out of business in a few years.

I know several people who run OSX on their PCs.
I could be a smart alec and say because Macs rule being I'm a very long-time Apple customer. :-)
